My talk did not really compare the sustainability of economic growth in China and India, but merely compared the extent of globalisation of the two countries.

I think India’s recent economic performance is really great and is sustainable. Although, unlike in the case of China’s growth, much of the impetus for India’s economic growth has emanated from the service sector, certain manfacturing sectors in the Indian case holds great potential. Autoparts, pharmaceuticals, cotton txtiles are three industries that are doing well. This list is slowly increasing. For instance chip design capability is slowly giving us manufacturing capability in semiconductor devices. Another industry which has started showing its head is the aerospace industry. With Indian steel becoming competitive, time is not too far away when our entire capital goods sector becomes competitive. In short India too will improve its growth potential as the years go by. The only dark cloud will be increasing income inequalities. This is bound to happen in a country which has given the earlier attempts at reducing inequalities, like the land reforms, a short shrift.

Especially that part where you compared the two most populous countries where one is the largest democracy the other is not but ..to mind it appears China is lagging behind because of it’s language skills or rather the lack of English and it will not be too far away when a day arrives one fine morning and India would be fighting like it did back in the 60’s unawares and disappointed. What do you think?
